Founded in the United States in 2010, Backcountry Discovery Routes® (BDR®) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating, preserving and promoting off-highway routes for adventure and dual-sport motorcycle travel. Developed by and for adventure riders, BDR has become a leading reference for motorcyclists looking to explore some of the most spectacular and remote backcountry landscapes in the United States.

BDR maps are designed specifically for adventure motorcycle travel and provide detailed information for planning multi-day journeys along official Backcountry Discovery Routes. Waterproof and tear-resistant, these printed maps complement BDR’s free GPS tracks and digital planning resources, helping riders identify routes, fuel stops, lodging, camping areas, services, points of interest and other essential information along the way.

Classic BDR routes typically cover hundreds of miles through a combination of dirt and gravel roads, forest roads, remote backroads and paved connecting sections. In 2022, the organization also introduced BDR-X, a series of shorter loop-style adventures designed to deliver the BDR experience over just a few days. From Washington and California to Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and beyond, each route is carefully developed and verified with adventure and dual-sport motorcycles in mind.

More than a collection of maps and routes, BDR is committed to protecting access to public lands, promoting responsible riding and rider safety, and supporting rural communities through motorcycle tourism. The organization works with land managers, volunteers and industry partners to help preserve backcountry riding opportunities for future generations.
